The Hofburg was, until 1919,  the official residence of the Habsburgs.  From here they ruled a large part of  Europe for over 600 years. Today  it houses the offices of the President of  Austria, the Spanish Riding  School, a number of museums and the Austrian  National Library.

The Hofburg was built on the  site of a small  castle dating from the Middle Ages. Every Kaiser (emperor) added   something to it resulting in a wide range of architectural styles.
